Ecology

Ecology

An ecological assessment is a study of the plants and animals that occur or may occur on a property. These assessments are typically undertaken before a new development or activity that may have an impact on plants and animals. This process is undertaken to inform development design consistent with local, state and commonwealth requirements.

Ecological assessments can vary from basic one day assessments to multi-day or weeks long assessments of a site. As a general rule, more detailed assessments are required where endangered or threatened species are likely to be impacted, or where specific development controls are likely to be required to minimise environmental impacts.

Range Environmental is experienced in determining an appropriate level of assessment for projects, ensuring both regulatory assessment requirements are met (minimising delays) and the avoidance of unnecessary reporting.

Working with a wide range of clients

Range Environmental has prepared a significant number of ecological assessments, flora survey reports, vegetation and fauna management plans, rehabilitation plans, covenant management plans, due diligence assessments and regularly provides environmental planning advice for both large- and small-scale developments. Outside of urban development our team regularly works with local governments, state government, civil works contractors, extractive industries and rural industries.

Range Environmental is available to assist with development due diligence, development planning, detailed assessment and reporting, operational works support and project management of environmental impact mitigation solutions.

Our clients and projects are varied but include residential and commercial developments, infrastructure projects, solar farms, quarries, industrial developments, local government and agricultural developments. We regularly also assist individual prospective home builders with obtaining required local/state ecological and bushfire approvals to facilitate their build.

We will help you along the way

We will help you decide whether a preliminary or a more detailed ecological assessment is appropriate given the level of regulatory protection over a site, site conditions and sensitivity, the nature of the development, time and budget available and anticipated application requirements. Our preliminary ecological assessments are regularly utilised by clients as part of property due diligence prior to buying a property or for ecological constraints assessments when planning a new development.

Our team has experience in providing both ecological and bushfire hazard assessments concurrently and works regularly within project teams to provide sensible, balanced project outcomes.

Agency Liaison

Our staff have extensive experience in representing our clients at pre-lodgement and project meetings with the Federal Government, State Government (SARA) and Local Council. We can help you navigate the application process and negotiate decision notices on your behalf to achieve best practice methods to support both you and the environment.

FAQs

  • Am I allowed to clear trees on my property?

This is a common question that we are asked and unfortunately there isn't a simple answer. This is because it varies by the zoning of land, purpose and extent of the clearing, the sensitivity of the area to be cleared and if your property is subject to any protections under Local, State or Federal legislation. Read our article.

  • How do I find out the ecological protections that might apply to my property?

Your property could have ecological protections over it under Local, State or Federal legislation.  It is also important to realise that even if your property doesn’t have any trees, it may still be subject to some form of ecological protections under different laws. Read our article.

  • Can I clear Koala Habitat on my property

Yes, depending on what you plan to build and use the land for. Development for purposes such as housing, industry, infrastructure and essential services may be permissible when assessed against the Regulations. Read more
