  • Assessment of PFAS contamination risk at the site to determine the suitability of the land for future land uses.

  • Environmental Protection Act 1994.
  • National Environment Protection (Assessment of Site Contamination) Measure 1999 (Amendment No. 1) (NEPC, 2013).
  • PFAS National Environmental Management Plan.

Range Environmental undertook a contaminated land investigation for a property at Oakey. The site was near the Oakey Army Aviation Centre (AACO). The site included a large stormwater drain that flowed from the AACO through the site and to Oakey Creek.

The AACO was identified by the Department of Defence as a source of environmental contamination in Oakey area by per- and poly-fluoroalkyl substances (PFAS). Therefore, PFAS was a key contaminant of concern at the site due to close proximity to the AACO and the stormwater drain.

Soil, sediment and surface water sampling for PFAS was undertaken at the site. Groundwater sampling was not undertaken as the risk of contamination was high based on studies completed by the Department of Defence. The purpose of the assessment was to determine the risk of PFAS contamination at the site and in the stormwater drain and how it may affect the future uses of the site.
